An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a test that measures the electrical activity of the heart to assist diagnose certain heart problems. The leads are connected to an ECG machine, which captures the electrical activity of the heart muscle and displays it as a trace on a screen or on paper. Any change in heart rhythm or pace, as well as damage to the heart muscle, can alter the electrical activity of the heart. A doctor will study the trace for unique characteristics of various cardiac diseases. Before obtaining an ECG, you can eat and drink normally (unless your doctor has advised otherwise).
